Projects

As well as organising social events, the SNEJLD also runs various projects which trainees and NQs are welcome to get involved with.

The JLD are keen for local groups to contribute to the national website. This is a good way to publicize our local group - so please feel free contact SNEJLD with anything you feel may be relevant. This could be a Top 10 Tips piece, a regional focus article, an opinion piece or a blog entry, for example a review of a TV programme or film with a legal focus, or your thoughts on topics that would interest members.

Webinars

The JLD are running a series of online seminars on credit-crunch related issues to provide help, tips and assistance for its members. The free webinars will be invaluable for trainees and newly qualified solicitors who are concerned about how the economic downturn might affect them.

The February webinar will deal with managing debt and stress, and invites LawCare and a national debt management specialist to discuss how to manage potential financial and personal issues resulting from the credit crunch. The session in March will deal with re-training and re-employment, including an outplacement counsellor and a speaker from Kaplan Law School to discuss the recruitment market, current trends and whether re-training or cross-qualifying is a possibility.

Dates and times to be confirmed.

District Judge Shadowing Scheme

The District Judge Shadowing Scheme has operated within the Ipswich and Colchester County Courts for a number of years with great success. The scheme enables trainee solicitors to attend the Courts for a half day or full day session to observe district judges at work. The scheme has proved to be extremely useful and valuable and has been well regarded by both trainees and practitioners alike.

For further details please contact Emma Champion.

Mentoring Scheme

Each year the SNEJLD runs a mentoring scheme for students attending Essex University and Anglia Ruskin University. The aim of the scheme is to provide information, advice and to answer any questions students might have about the journey to qualification.

Having recently experienced the dramas of law school, and the stress of training contract applications, current trainees are uniquely positioned to provide information to those following in their footsteps.

Whether you need some general advice about how you go from being a student to a solicitor, or whether you want some specific information about training in a regional firm, we, on the SNEJLD committee, will try to pass on our hard won experience.

If you have a specific question or need some general advice please feel free to email Prasan Modasia and your question will be passed on to an appropriate committee member. They will try to respond within ten days of receipt.

Good luck!
